The Backyard Barn and its work first began in 2002. JoAnne was sweeping the aisle of a barn in Centreville, Delaware that she and a fellow horseperson were leasing. The idea that one day she would own her own horse arm and name it "The Backyard Barn" was born. An initial vision to serve youth, families, all in the community ith empowering and life-learning experiences with horses continued to grow.

We are now proud to be a 501(c)3 organization doing this rewarding work at our private horse farm in Bear, Delaware. From foster children to veterans, from seniors to youth and everyone else, we know that everyone wants to thrive and fit in somewhere. Horses are innately capable of giving feedback and providing refection to our behaviors. And so, they show us, from their abundant sense of awareness of themselves and of us, a very healthy way to do that.
